The Jyvaskyla Music and Arts Centre, Finland
Competion entry in collaboration with J. Bowley Architect, Houston
Competition entry for the City Art Museum and concert hall for the Jyvaskyla Symphonia is based on the concept of a box that unifies and encloses the three main functional elements of the building under one roof; the auditorium, the music school and the art museum. The new building incorporating Aalto's Defense Corps Building, an existing building on the same site, is accessed by the monumental stair that articulate the existing and new building. The protective glass skin of the building was also conceived a billboard to project information and exhibition related material to the outside world. The small music hall for the chamber music and art museum open onto the atrium space and add a further layer of protection to the auditorium, which is expressed as a jewel box “egg” within a glass box. The auditorium is clad in Finish Oak one of the few hardwoods indigenous to Finland.
